Special Wheels

Chapter One

"Sshh!" said Beebo to Peeper as they tiptoed into the classroom. But no matter how quiet they tried to be, the old wooden floorboards still creaked under their combined weight.

And just when the floorboards stopped creaking, Beebo and Peeper stopped in their tracks.

"Do you hear that?" asked Beebo.

Beebo and Peeper had gone into their Kindy classroom instead of playing outside. They were alone in the dusty, musky room on a dare by the Strange twins -- Weirdo and Weirdel -- who claimed there were ghosts in the class closet.

"Hear what?" whispered Peeper.

"That!" answered Beebo as the "Woooooooo-oooooooh!" became louder and longer.

As they heard the Wooooooo-ing, both Beebo and Peeper ran out of the room as fast as their little legs could take them.

"Weirdo! Weirdel!" shouted Beebo and Peeper looking for them in the playground. None of the other kids knew where the Strange twins had gone.

Chapter Two

"OK, children. Settle down. Settle down," said Miss Cherry, the Kindy School teacher.

When Beebo and Peeper went back into the classroom, Weirdo and Weirdel were already there. Sitting angelically waiting for class to begin.

"Hey! Where were you?" You owe us two X-Men cards! We won the dare!"

Weirdo and Weirdel just smiled, or smirked rather.

"You lost the dare," said Weirdo.

"You weren't in the room long enough," continued Weirdel.

"How would you know if you weren't even outside when we came out?" asked Beebo.

"Oh ..." paused Weirdo.

"We were there all right. We were picking berries behind the bushes," said Weirdel.

"You were not! You owe us!" Beebo was getting cross.

But just then Miss Cherry walked in. "Now settle down, class. We'll be practising our numbers today ..."

Beebo just glared at the Stranges. Weirdo and Weirdel had smirks on their faces. Peeper sighed.

Just then there was a knock at the door.

It was Dr Whoopee.

"Whoopee! Children, you have a new classmate. This is Sam Smiles. Her family just moved to Deliland. Whoopee!"

All the children stared at Sam. This was no ordinary kid. She was different. She had her own wheels. She was sitting in a chair that had wheels and she didn't stand up. She moved around by rolling the wheels on her chair.

Chapter Three

At lunch time, Beebo and Peeper decided to look for the Strange twins who had refused to pay up on the dare.

"Heh! Heh! Wheelie! Wheelie!" said Weirdo and Weirdel when Beebo and Peeper found them. But they weren't playing a game. They were pushing Sam around in her wheelchair.

All the other children were looking at the twins bully Sam. But nobody dared stop them. Not even the usually brave Beebo.

Then to everybody's surprise someone yelled "STOP IT!!!!"

They turned and saw that it was Peeper! Peeper? Yell? The quietest boy in Kindy School yell?

When Weirdo released Sam's wheelchair, it didn't stop moving. Actually it went all the way down the slope in the direction of the city below!

"Stop that wheelchair!" shouted Peeper who ran after it. And so did everyone else.

"Heeeeeeellllllppppppp!!!!!!! Yeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!" screamed Sam.

Before anyone could stop the wheelchair it ran into a rock and Sam fell off.

She had to be taken to the hospital.

Chapter Four

"Thank you for trying to help me, Peeper," said Sam when Beebo and Peeper visited her.

"But I didn't help you," answered Peeper.

"But you tried. And that's what counts."

"Yes, thank you young man," said Mr Smiles, Sam's father. "You are one of the few who have stood up and tried to help Sam. In all her other schools, the children only know how to bully those who are different from them. It's so easy to make a joke out of things you don't understand. But it's not funny when you're in a wheelchair. And it's not a joke. Sam could get seriously hurt. Luckily she wasn't."
